Women’s Empowerment: Safety Empowered !

Women’s Empowerment: Need of the Hour !

Gender disparity in the country can be tackled only through proactive intervention in areas such as economic empowerment of women, building of adequate social and physical infrastructure and improving women’s role in governance, said the President.

In today’s contemporary world which is male dominant, women need to gain the same amount of power that men have. It is high time to forget that men are the only holders of power. In India, women are still facing different obstacles/bondages in male-dominated cultures and practices. There is a serious need for revision of national policy for women empowerment and to safeguard the interests of the other half of India. Since independents some efforts were made and now I believe that Indian women are slowly getting empowered in the sectors like education, politics, the work force and even more power within their own households with changing times. The value of any civilization can be arbitrated by the position of women in that society...

Today, women are busy running in the presidential campaign. The work force is covered with intellectual women who currently hold the CEO/CMD positions at large companies which were never held by Indian women in long ago. Now women have reached a long way eventually and have discovered a new path for them to come. Women rights well talked about as human rights. The concept of feminism is very vogue. Women’s right and changes effort to win equality for women have containing women's suffrage, feminism, women's property rights, equal opportunity in work and education, and equal pay. Now, the future of women is seeking out.
Indian women is now more confident of getting better-paid professional jobs than their flagging male counterparts. Clearly, there is an excellent amount of reason for the girls to be more confident than boys and this is because of their remarkable academic feat around the nation be it JEE, PMT or UPSC. This achievement of girls is an absolute reversal of what would have been expected a generation ago.
But, an upsetting place still remains for Indian women is the negative sexual attention that women often receive. Indian societies have received notoriety for being unsafe for women. Our National capital is now regarded as rape capital of India, this is where empowerment is needed the most. Whereby the fair sex is not only being hassled and raped but incidents of immoral trafficking also are very high in some parts of our country. Worst part is this business is running under the nose of the Govt. In one of the daily headlines 70 girls from north-eastern India were rescued in the national capital, there are thousands waiting for our Govt to wake up.  Add to this the heinous practice of female feticide and infanticide wherein nearly 10 million baby girls have been killed in the last twenty years alone. In fact, the level of atrocities against women is an indicator of the erosion of our society (its a understatement) and underscores that we are a suppressed society. Clearly, safety is an obsolete word in today’s India.
It is the duty of law enforcement agencies to prevent crimes against women but they fail to solve this alone. Teamwork by people is the key to eradicating this mess. People must come forward to help in rooting out such social evils. Law enforcing agencies cannot work alone. When the people are dynamic in their drive against crimes, the police cannot remain a mute spectator though they are supposed to be the protectors of citizens. They will be forced to dispense their forgotten duties. Youth should be motivated to be socially responsible and protect women. This is the need of the hour. Everyone must think of changing society. If we all abide by the rules, women in our cities will surely be safer.
According to Hindu mythology, the word ‘Ardhanarishvara’ meaning "The Lord whose half is a woman". What is the value of a man without a woman? We shouldn’t forget that there are many temples in our country devoted to the Goddesses and men also use to visit the temples for worshiping them. We need both male and female each other. We must work all together and both needs each other to survive and flourish, no one is absolute.
I do think that women should also be in place of man in today’s society. As they are now highly qualified, make remarkable contributions to the economy through their paid work. They work in a wide variety of professions around the country. They have now forsaken their homely image and are making a major contribution to global innovation of the country. They are working in different fields with man by doing hard work.It is said that women are the pillars of the economy of the world. They have the most imperative role in the family who keep it together. A campaign by Farhan Akhtar called as MARD(Men Against Rape and Discrimination) is a great initiative towards spreading awareness about gender inequlity and rape through social media.

India Vs China : Where are we on Military Ground?

India Vs China : Military Reality

Are we in position to compare with China in terms of military might. In recent times China has increased its military budget spending by over 11% this year and it was 12.7% last year .This increase in military spending  is matched by its growing assertiveness in pressing territorial claims with its neighbours India, Japan, Philippines, Malaysia, S.Korea and Vietnam . One of the  example is the South China Sea where Beijing contends that India's exploratory drilling by Govt. PSU ONGC with Vietnam is a breach of its sovereignty. Should India be worried?

The defeat of 1962 is still as fresh as yesterday. There is also the long-running border dispute over Arunachal Pradesh and J&K. From 1975 onwards China started declaring Sikkim as independent country it was only in 2003 under the leadership of AB Vajpayee the then PM of India they considered it as part of India. Years of double-digit budget increases have modernised the People's Liberation Army. China is also building or buying sophisticated weaponry, including a homegrown J-20 stealth fighter jet and an aircraft carrier. It’s worth to mention that China is only the second country in the world after USA to have a Stealth Fighter Jet and thus it has tactical advantage as stealth aircraft design makes it difficult for Radars to detect or track the aircraft effectively and hence increases the odds of a successful attack. What about India?

Our outgoing Army Chief Gen. VK Singh had cautioned the PM and MoD that the war-waging capability of the army has been hamstrung by long delays in procurement decisions. This is because most of the suppliers have been blacklisted by Govt of India. This contention is backed by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), a leading authority on political-military conflict.

The challenge for India, is the inability to fully disburse funds because of corruption, bureaucratic delays and inefficiencies in procurement. India does not suffer from a shortfall of funds. India  is the world's leading arms purchaser. But we don’t export even a single bullet, to become a military power we need to be at surplus then only we can think of exporting. Our defence budget rose nearly 12% last year but it was majoritarily because of increased number of pensioners and 6th pay revision.

The recent contract to buy combat aircraft from France's Dassault Rafale is called "the mother of all deals". Yet, India will be playing catch-up with China for years to come. Now India's total military expenditure is expected to be still shy of $40 billion, we have to increase it considerably considering the fact that both China and Pakistan are investing heavily on their military.
The IISS shared the latest data on how India compares with China in military prowess from its The Military Balance report. The message from the statistics is clear; India has a long march ahead before it can rival China's military muscle.

Now lets look at the ground reality India lives in a very hostile neighbourhood surrounded by sly neighbours that are waiting to occupy your  land  inch by inch and these rogues  are best buddies "all-weather friends" as they define their friendship. China and Pakistan friendship is higher than that of skies as quoted by their Premier. India will find it hard to fight on two fronts at a time if an ugly situation arose - this face-off point at Daulat Beg Oldie was too close to the disputed Siachin glacier and Karakoram Pass (strategically important area joining China to Pakistan). India is gradually moving towards the United States since Soviet break-up in early 90s and the kind of defence deal that India had with the Soviet Union in 70s and 80s would have ensured that Russia comes to India's rescue in case of need. In non declared fashion India and Russia (then USSR) were great friends and  so pretty much peace prevailed since 1971. Now Russia has its own problems boiling and also India is not a part of NATO and it’s in the process of getting closer to the US, but still cold war suspicion prevails. In the mean time the rogue to the East has adequately armed the rogue to the West to keep India busy while arming itself substantially. India needs to be proactive, befriend its enemy's enemy (Japan, Vietnam, etc) and forge closer ties with the West to counter China, it needs to be a muti-pronged approach, which actually is happening but too slow with all corruption cases around and mis governance.

Sarabjit Singh : A Disowned Child of India

A Disowned Child of India

Sarabjit Singh or we should call  Manjit Singh after all this is the name Pakistan has give him to prosecute . What we all know about him... he is an Indian national convicted and jailed in Kot Lakhpat jail, Pakistan since 1990. He was convicted in Pakistan for involvement in the 1990 serial bomb blasts at Lahore and Faisalabad that killed 14 people. This is what Pak SC said in their verdict . But fact of the matter is he was never in Pakistan at that time.  Sarabjit  always claimed that he was a farmer  in village Bhikhiwind, located along the Indo-Pak border in Tarn Taran district of Punjab  and is a victim of mistaken identity, who strayed into Pakistan from his village located on the border, three months after the bombings, when drunk. He was sentenced to death in 1991, since then our Govt tried to negotiate with their Pakistani counterparts but all these efforts were for limited time and we did not even raised the issue in our diplomatic meetings, there was serious negligence on part of Narsimha Rao Govt.  but his hanging had been repeatedly postponed to cater the interests of Pakistan and it also made India on backfoot on this issue. Till date  Five mercy petitions  were filed on his behalf, in which Sarabjit maintained that he served twenty-two years of prison term for a crime he had not committed.
Nawaz Sarif and Musharraf assured India on their visits that they would release Sarabhit.  On 26 June 2012, it was reported that Pakistan's President had ordered his release on the basis of his petition filed on 28 May 2012. However, five hours later this pardon was revoked and it was claimed that another prisoner, Surjeet Singh, had been pardoned and not Sarabjit.. And now in April 2013, Sarabjit suffered serious injuries in an attack by the fellow prison inmates, and died on 2 May 2013 in the Jinnah hospital at Lahore. What will our Govt do this time... they did nothing when two of our Jawans  of Indian Army were  brutally killed. What are we expecting this time around, our Govt is just happy to get the body after post-mortem!!
There are hundreds of Sarabjit in Pakistani jails for more than 15 years now for spying and intelligence charges. Is there any effort to bring back these behind the scenes soldiers of India. The intelligence agencies of both the countries have been using spy service since independence and this is what happens to every spy. Govt is with you till you are caught and  if you are caught they would simply disown you. Story of Spy just remains breaking news for some days and then we move on. Here a question is , if our late Govt is going to honour this man of India ? Are you going to give National Respect which he deserves or just crocodile tears...!!

CHINESE INTRUSION: NATIONAL SECURITY AT STAKE

Chinese Intrusion: Alarm bell

Ever since we got the news of Chinese intrusion into Indian territory the UPA Govt. continues to downplay the incursion issue in Ladakh saying its only perception and localised issue. The 19-kilometres deep intrusion into the strategically sensitive area around Daulet Beg Oldi in the Aksai Chin region, is this only a localised issue? If one were to believe minister of state (MoS) for home RPN Singh, the presence of Chinese troops (People’s Liberation Army) inside the Indian territory for 15 days since 16th April 2013 and the attempt at grabbing 19 km of land cannot even be called an incursion, then then then what should we call it Mr. RPN are they our guest, sitting and waiting for snacks in our drawing room!

My question here is why only Chinese have this perception problem? Why not we have this problem and why do we want to downplay this serious issue relating to national integrity and nation’s image.
In one of the TV show “Seedhi Baat” programme on Aaj Tak, Mr RPN Singh shockingly ended up giving China the benefit of doubt and explained that India’s claim on the territory was “ a matter of perception”. “ The Chinese think we are intruding into their territory. Forty Chinese soldiers camping in four tents (now five tents) is not an intrusion. We think it’s our territory. Mr Prime Minister what benefit of doubt do we give when some outsider gets into our house without our permission and sets up his bedding. We would throw  that person out immediately just because its a matter of our country and not your own house, you cant sit back, and now you are giving this benefit of doubt.
What more... Singh even ruled out the possibility of deploying the army by asserting that it wasn’t a full-fledged incursion. I did not understand what did he meant with   full-fledged incursion ? Do we want the PLA to intrude upto Delhi and then we would call it full-fledged and then we should act? Is this what he meant ?We should post the army 4 times the number they are as we did in Tawang in 1986 to push PLA back.
Here It is necessary at the outset to dispel any notions that the ongoing over two week long stand-off between PLA and the Indian Army in the barren, but strategically important, area around Daulet Beg Oldi (DBO) is just an isolated or unplanned incident. It is well planned and well institutionalised .Similar incidents of armed eyeball-to-eyeball confrontation have occurred in past in 1986 in Tawang sector Arunachal Pradesh and also since 2008 frequency of intrusion increased to 400-500 times a year all along the entire length of our 4,057 kilometres border guarded by ITBP. Every time they intrude mark their presence and go back but this time around they are firm and say you are in Chinese Territory. Is this a move of provocation or just a tactical military move. But i think on this occasion, Beijing seems to have a specific motive. What is Interesting here is, the intrusion coincided with the release of China’s latest Defence White Paper and PLA Navy Day.

Beijing remains transparently unmoved by the adverse media publicity and damage it has caused to India-China relations. It has neither moved to resolve the situation despite three flag meetings at the level of local army commanders and communications from New Delhi requesting resolution. Chinese are adamant here and our UPA Govt is trying best to giving some other unacceptable excuses. Beijing has thus made it abundantly clear that it will defuse the situation only at a time of its choosing. This is a win win situation for them and here our UPA Govt.  is not just loosing ground to stand but also it is being called a coward Govt. By their partners like Mr.  Mulayam Singh (SP Leader). Beijing’s stance confirms too that the stand-off is not a local incident provoked by the action of a local commander, but one initiated with the full knowledge of China’s senior leadership.

The timing of this intrusion points to a specific motive. It comes just weeks before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Japan and is a warning against India expressing support to Japan. Remind you China and Japan have Island issues to be resolved. The backdrop is the steadily escalating tension between China and Japan over the Senkaku (Diaoyu) Islands. Here India has to align itself to all anti china countries like Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Philippines and Vietnam all these countries have border, sea and island issues with China. Can we take advantage of this to push China back on Diplomatic ground but here we have Mr Khurshid , lets see what he brings out from his visit to Beijing on 8th May. Till then our Govt is playing a waiting game...

In the context of China’s national interests, China’s top leaders strongly apprehend that the US is putting together an alliance comprising India, Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines and Australia to contain China’s rise. Is this there problem that india is aligning with the USA. China’s latest Defence White Paper released on 16 April 2013, in a thinly veiled comment declared that “Some country has strengthened its Asia-Pacific military alliances, expanded its military presence in the region, and frequently makes the situation there tenser.” The reference to the US is implicit here.

Tension between China and Japan over the Senkaku (Diaoyu) Islands has risen since 2010. China has been adamant in asserting its maritime territorial claims over the Senkakus (Diaoyu). More significant is the statement of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson. Speaking at the regular Foreign Ministry briefing in Beijing on April 26, 2013, she repeatedly, and for the first time publicly, referred that the Chinese did not intrude in the Indian territory where as India only intruded in Chinese territory . The statement raises the level of the dispute significantly and clarifies that Beijing does not consider the matter open for negotiation.

There have been warning indicators earlier that Beijing views the growing warmth in relations between India and US and between India and Japan with suspicion. In the days following the largest ever US-ROK joint military exercises in July 2010, a Hong Kong-based pro-Beijing newspaper observed: “the issue of China’s territorial disputes with neighbouring countries will ignite the flames of war sooner or later. If a country must be chosen for sacrifice, India will be the first choice. They say India’s long term occupation of southern Tibet is indeed worrying. If armed force is used to resolve border disputes, China must pick a country to target first, and it will definitely pick a big country, which means choosing between Japan and India…”.  Other references stated that China’s relationship with India and Japan had limits imposed by history. With this Beijing dragged India into the South China Sea dispute. Our disabled UPA Is yet to respond to these references strongly, how can we forget 1962 war a blunder by then PM Mr. Nehru. These so called chini bhai took away 3200 sq.km of land in Arunachal Pradesh and have control over Aksai Chin in J&K.

China’s latest action needs to be viewed in the backdrop of the People’s Republic of China’s readiness to employ military force on issues of national interest relating to its security, sovereignty and territorial integrity.  Beijing is adept at using a blend of threats and promise of military retaliation to deter an adversary from taking actions contrary to Beijing’s interests. India needs to calibrate and time its response. But one thing is clear we need to respond effectively, there are some do’s which we can apart from military action there can be:
(A) Taking up issue of TIBET in the UN to put China on Back foot.
(B) Stopping trade of any kind / imposing various taxes on Chinese goods.
(C) Putting China under question on human right ground on the issue of TIBET.
(D)Placing of Mountain Division on strategic location at DBO to put pressure.
